The Heart of NYC’s Fashion Industry | The Garment District

February 16, 2017
Brown Eyed Toast - The Garment District - Featured Image

I’ve long lived just a mere stone’s throw from one of the most understated yet vital parts of the NYC Fashion Industry: the Garment District. To many, it looks like just a stretch of claustrophobic Midtown buildings, dotted by dress shops and fabric stores. But little do people know, this is where fashion designs come to life. Before all of the glamour of NYFW and the dazzling array of outfits strutting down the runways, designers and garment makers give structure, texture, and color to those first sketches in the Garment District. But of course, there’s so much more than just fashion here as well – there is a burgeoning shopping scene, vibrant nightlife, and other hidden gems just begging to be Instagrammed. While the list goes on, these four places are among my favorite for a taste of what the Garment District has to offer. Read more after the jump!

Winter Chic with Bronzallure

December 15, 2016
Brown Eyed Toast - Winter Chic with Bronzallure - 1

During the winter, I only have two styles: layered marshmallow or layered chic. Either way, I like to dress pragmatically for the weather. There’s no point exposing bare legs and risking pneumonia in 30 degree weather. When I do dress in the former of the two styles, you’ll find me bundled up in the most intense parkas. But to be real, that’s not all that attractive to see on a fashion blog (although you may catch a peek of it on my IG feed!), so for events and festivities, I’ll opt for a layered chic look instead. Even then however, it’s hard to craft an outfit that will look elegant and stand out. This is where jewelry comes in.

No matter how layered or dark an outfit, great jewelry can instantly elevate any look. Some of my go-to pieces as of late are a variety of stunning rose gold Bronzallure rings, bracelets, and earrings. Created with 18KT Rosé gold, hand-selected natural gemstones and Italian craftsmanship, each item adds a glamorous finish to your look no matter how dressed up or down. NYFW | Naeem Khan Spring/ Summer 2017

October 5, 2016

The final event of the recent NYFW season (at least for myself) was a spectacular parade of vibrant colors at the Naeem Khan SS17 show. Khan is yet another one those designers who immediately inspires thoughts of sparkles and romance with his intricately embellished gowns, but we often forget that he owns a piece of fashion history having worked for Roy Halston, another fashion great, in the 70’s. Known for his minimalist and sleek designs, Halston inspired an era of chic discotheque and reinvented American wear. We saw this same inspiration in the opening pieces of Khan’s collection – bold, big geometric designs on caped-dresses and slinky silhouettes – before the designs naturally gave way to his signature ball gowns and frocks that we all love so much. NYFW | Fashion Palette Australian RTW and Swim/ Resort SS17

October 4, 2016

I’ve always admired the incredible amount of creative talent yet untapped in Australia (this is where labels like Dion Lee, Zimmermann, and TOME were born after all), and so it was a pleasure to attend the Fashion Palette Australian RTW and Swim/ Resort SS17 shows this past NYFW. For those who are unfamiliar, Fashion Palette is an Australian fashion agency focused on bringing designers from down under to the NYFW runways and increasing their presence and exposure. This is no easy feat, coordinating with and presenting 15 Australian designers during the height of one of the most exclusive and biggest fashion platforms in the world, but one that was executed flawlessly for their fifth season yet. Featuring a variety of RTW and Swim/ Resort designers, this was an amazing opportunity to get a first glimpse at some of the Australian brands entering the US market.

NYFW | Tadashi Shoji Spring/ Summer 2017

September 30, 2016

“All things change,” Buddha proclaimed at the end of his earthly journey. Inspired by this ecstatic vision of rebirth, Tadashi Shoji debuted yet another stunning collection for the Spring/ Summer 2017 season this past NYFW. The imagery of wild animals floating upwards in the introductory video heralded the dreamy parade of parachute skirts and voluminous, carefree silhouettes about to glide down the runway. Feminine yet sultry, his designs found a perfect balance of draping the body in a tangible yet ethereal manner.

NYFW | Reem Acra Spring/ Summer 2017

September 29, 2016

I have a penchant for feminine gowns. Dresses adorned with sparkles and lavish embellishments – be still my heart! And so, it was nothing short of a dream to be able to stroll through Reem Acra’s secret garden for the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Full blossoms and sheer fabrics inspired romantic whimsy while voluminous tops and even fuller skirts kept silhouettes interesting for varied day and night looks. But as we all know, words simply can’t do her designs justice – you’ll have to take a look at these stunning looks yourself.

NYFW | Leanne Marshall Spring/ Summer 2017

September 29, 2016

Leanne Marshall’s designs were one of the first New York Fashion Week shows I had ever attended, and let me tell you, it set a high bar. The sight of her designs billowing as the models made their way down the runway is a vision I think most people idealize when they think about NYFW. It certainly opened my eyes to the beauty of watching a fashion show in real life!

This season, Leanne Marshall’s SS17 collection reflected that same note of feminine elegance and grace present in her last show (reviewed here) and presented a cohesive look that cemented her brand as the go-to designer for ethereal gowns fit for brides and other black-tie affairs alike.
