Brown Eyed Toast - 2017 New Years Resolutions - 1

It’s hard to believe yet another year has flown by! I’m still one of those people that feel like 2010 was just yesterday and have to pinch myself when I read the number on next year’s calendar hah! In addition to how quickly 2016 disappeared in the blink of an eye, the holiday season seems to speed everything up even more, doesn’t it? Thankfully, the stretch between Christmas and New Year’s Day provides a small window to breathe a sigh of relief and meditate on the coming year. As I spent the holiday season with my husband and in-laws in snowy Utah, this time away from the hectic streets of NYC provided the perfect opportunity to take a step back, reflect on all that has passed in 2016, and set goals for the new year.

I’ve written before on how I balk at sharing some of these personal aspects of my life, but this year I want to publicly share my 2017 new year’s resolutions with you all. Not only will it help keep me accountable but in doing so, I also hope to encourage those struggling with the same challenges and grow in solidarity together! And so, here it is: my five 2017 New Year’s Resolutions!

This Is Your Year

Brown Eyed Toast - 2017 New Years Resolutions - 7

1.  Embrace New Experiences

I am quite stubborn, and once I make up my mind (especially about entertainment choices or experiences), there’s nothing anyone can do to persuade me otherwise. But recently, Matt (my husband) somehow convinced me to watch a movie I had long held a bias against because of the reviews (it was Tomorrowland by the way), and turns out it was amazing! Of course, the fact that George Clooney starred in it certainly helped. But the experience taught me that once I let go of my own views and became more willing to step outside my comfort zone, it can be so rewarding. And so in this new year, I am determined to take a beat before passing judgement on trying something new and to just go for it!

2. Live More in the Moment

One of my biggest struggles when attending a fun event or traveling is being so consumed with getting the perfect shot that I often forget to pause and fully take in the moment. The best example? Food getting cold during meal photos! Sometimes we have to just live with a marginally less perfect shot, because life doesn’t happen behind a camera. We have to be present and experience (or sometimes simply taste) it, and I plan to step out from behind the camera just a second quicker every time to do so!

3. Work Out (Or Just.. Be Healthier in General)

While I’m grateful that I am genetically predisposed to a smaller frame, I’ve also used it as an excuse to get away with not exercising a few too many times. But no longer! As I’ve gotten older and my body has changed, the effects of diet and lifestyle choices are more visible on my health. Now, even simple things like eating too much sugar can put me in a sluggish mood. Vice versa, simply chugging cold water or going for brisk walk can be powerful tools to re-energize and reboot! While balancing time and commitments are important, so are health and diet – two things I’ve neglected far too long. It’s time to dust off my gym membership card and put it to more use in 2017!

4. Share More of My Personal Life

As Instagram has become more of a curated platform for bloggers, it’s often easy to choose what to present and how to filter our perception of life. On this front, I’m guilty of planning my feed in a certain way that, of course while staying true to my own style and aesthetic, may not necessarily share all aspects of my personal life. Did you guys know I am married, based in NYC, or have a female Maltese dog named Coco? Did you know that I love slipping into my PJ’s as soon as I come home, or that my favorite food is actually steak and pizza (yes yes, we bloggers survive on more than just lattes and pretty pastries. Quelle surprise, non?)? In this new year, I want to share all of these facts and more with you all and not just select facets of my life.

5. Limit Work Hours/ Days

I am incredibly blessed and grateful for how my Instagram platform and the blog has grown over 2016, and being the workaholic that I am, the thrill of seeing any type of progress keeps me chugging along at all hours. As my professional and personal commitments grow however, I’ve come to realize that a balance is in order. One shouldn’t feel chained to social media or to keeping an online presence. Therefore, I am committed to taking more breaks to fully enjoy and be present with family and loved ones in 2017.

So there it is guys, my New Year’s Resolutions! I certainly don’t expect for all of these changes to happen overnight, but practice makes perfect, and I hope to put all of these into practice one day at a time. Did any of these goals resonate with you or appear on your own lists? I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you approach the new year!

As always, thanks so much for reading and hope you enjoyed!

First of all, I really enjoyed hearing little bits and pieces about your travels to Utah ( the puppies were adorable and I know they miss you) and I could tell , just by your posts, that you were having a lovely time with your in-laws. I am like you , by the way sometimes I can’t believe it’s not 2010 and love to slip into pajamas and prefer pizza and steak to pretty pastry. I love your list of resolutions and know you will accomplish all of them!

These are all very practical and thoughtful resolutions and I wish you the best of luck fulfilling them in 2017. I think the one about limiting your work hours/days will be a good one for making the year a happy, balanced and fun one.

    Love, Liz

Wow, I love this post. Your photos are so amazing, and this little workspace corner is just adorable. Love your hand jewelries and stationary. I, too, have 2017 resolutions and one of them is to exercise as well. Cheers to 2017 and I hope you have the best year.

Is this space in your house? It’s so pretty! And I always eat my food and forget to take pics LOL. When I got old and became a mom I learned to not sweat the small stuff. But I agree that trying something new should top everyone’s list. Looking forward to an amazing 2017!

If I was to actually have New Years resolutions I would have the same as you have. 🙂 However, I believe in not having them, but making them happen instead. That way there’s no disappointment in it either if you didn’t succeed. However I love the way you look at life and cutting down on work is #1 on my list!

I love this! Especially #1 embracing new experiences. This actually was a resolution that I made for myself last year. It panned out really well as I went from an LA city girl to living in a small town in Oregon called Eugene. Life is all about new experiences. It changes you and shapes you. Being out of your comfort zone could be the best thing for you. I hope you have an amazing 2017

Such a great post! I think your resolutions are great! Embracing new experiences is always good! I also like that you mentioned living in the moment more. This is such a big one for me! Being a social media blogger, this can be hard at times.

    Happy 2017!

All of your images are absolutely stunning! I am loving all of your resolutions! I particularly have to be really strict with my blogging schedule to create balance in my life! Also, love the point you made about being in the moment! My food ends up getting cold sometimes to getting the perfect shot!

Oh my goodness your photos are actual perfection! I really enjoyed this personal post babe and many of your resolutions are the same as mine 🙂 I think that living in the moment is so important as a blogger, as you said, we are often so fixated on getting the perfect shot that we don’t really enjoy the moment. Taking breaks is so important too, after all, every other job under the sun gets time off, so bloggers should too.

I think I can see myself with all your resolutions as well! Living in the moment is one of the top things I want to achieve this year. More than food, but with beautiful places that my husband and I travel to, I want to make sure we spend enough quality time with each other first instead of trying to take that perfect photo.

Your OOTD is really cool and cozy! And I love your photos, may I ask what lens do you use?
Also… Great new year’s resolutions! I have all of them too for my self, except no. 4: I know a looot of bloggers share their personal life with their followers, but I don’t feel confortable doing that. Not yet, anyway.
I hope your 2017 will be amazing!
  • Reply Katya Bychkova January 4, 2017 at 11:30 am

That’s so brace of you to share all of the resolutions! I was thinking of doing the same and then I was like – what if I fail? Writing things down may actually help to stick to your resolutions so please let me know how it goes!

I found in this list a few resolutions that I’m hoping on sticking in 2017. It’s the one about working out and another one is by limiting my working hours. I’m an extreme workaholic too and I don’t think it’s super healthy to work all the time without any breaks. I do understand that it’s perhaps the most difficult resolution to stick too – oftentimes I just can’t stop working!!

Let’s support and inspire each other this year and try working less but more effectively! And stick to a working out schedule!!

I so love everything you’ve said! I didn’t even have time to think what my new resolution is this 2017 but I did recently signed up for equinox and an online coach. I have neglected my body this 2016 where as I gained astonishing 30lbs. 🙁 And I can’t wait for you to share more personal stuff in your instagram! I do love your instagram page so much. Have a great 2017 Soo!

Soo, I truly enjoyed reading this post. Your writing is portrayed in a very hopeful and true way. Life is such a beautiful thing and we should all be so lucky to enjoy each day. I can relate to your resolution on “living in the moment.” This was an aspect of my life that was so difficult because I’m such a perfectionist. I would find myself consumed with something that either happened in the past or may happen in the future rather than just being present in time. My journey in life has definitely taught me to live more in the present. So now, thats pretty much all I do haha! And it’s incredibly rewarding!

Remember to always follow your passions. Work on that part of your life very deeply and you’ll always be fulfilled. Sending you lots of love in this new year and many wishes for fulfilling these wonderful resolutions!
