It’s hard to believe yet another year has flown by! I’m still one of those people that feel like 2010 was just yesterday and have to pinch myself when I read the number on next year’s calendar hah! In addition to how quickly 2016 disappeared in the blink of an eye, the holiday season seems to speed everything up even more, doesn’t it? Thankfully, the stretch between Christmas and New Year’s Day provides a small window to breathe a sigh of relief and meditate on the coming year. As I spent the holiday season with my husband and in-laws in snowy Utah, this time away from the hectic streets of NYC provided the perfect opportunity to take a step back, reflect on all that has passed in 2016, and set goals for the new year.
I’ve written before on how I balk at sharing some of these personal aspects of my life, but this year I want to publicly share my 2017 new year’s resolutions with you all. Not only will it help keep me accountable but in doing so, I also hope to encourage those struggling with the same challenges and grow in solidarity together! And so, here it is: my five 2017 New Year’s Resolutions!
1. Embrace New Experiences
I am quite stubborn, and once I make up my mind (especially about entertainment choices or experiences), there’s nothing anyone can do to persuade me otherwise. But recently, Matt (my husband) somehow convinced me to watch a movie I had long held a bias against because of the reviews (it was Tomorrowland by the way), and turns out it was amazing! Of course, the fact that George Clooney starred in it certainly helped. But the experience taught me that once I let go of my own views and became more willing to step outside my comfort zone, it can be so rewarding. And so in this new year, I am determined to take a beat before passing judgement on trying something new and to just go for it!
2. Live More in the Moment
One of my biggest struggles when attending a fun event or traveling is being so consumed with getting the perfect shot that I often forget to pause and fully take in the moment. The best example? Food getting cold during meal photos! Sometimes we have to just live with a marginally less perfect shot, because life doesn’t happen behind a camera. We have to be present and experience (or sometimes simply taste) it, and I plan to step out from behind the camera just a second quicker every time to do so!
3. Work Out (Or Just.. Be Healthier in General)
While I’m grateful that I am genetically predisposed to a smaller frame, I’ve also used it as an excuse to get away with not exercising a few too many times. But no longer! As I’ve gotten older and my body has changed, the effects of diet and lifestyle choices are more visible on my health. Now, even simple things like eating too much sugar can put me in a sluggish mood. Vice versa, simply chugging cold water or going for brisk walk can be powerful tools to re-energize and reboot! While balancing time and commitments are important, so are health and diet – two things I’ve neglected far too long. It’s time to dust off my gym membership card and put it to more use in 2017!
4. Share More of My Personal Life
As Instagram has become more of a curated platform for bloggers, it’s often easy to choose what to present and how to filter our perception of life. On this front, I’m guilty of planning my feed in a certain way that, of course while staying true to my own style and aesthetic, may not necessarily share all aspects of my personal life. Did you guys know I am married, based in NYC, or have a female Maltese dog named Coco? Did you know that I love slipping into my PJ’s as soon as I come home, or that my favorite food is actually steak and pizza (yes yes, we bloggers survive on more than just lattes and pretty pastries. Quelle surprise, non?)? In this new year, I want to share all of these facts and more with you all and not just select facets of my life.
5. Limit Work Hours/ Days
I am incredibly blessed and grateful for how my Instagram platform and the blog has grown over 2016, and being the workaholic that I am, the thrill of seeing any type of progress keeps me chugging along at all hours. As my professional and personal commitments grow however, I’ve come to realize that a balance is in order. One shouldn’t feel chained to social media or to keeping an online presence. Therefore, I am committed to taking more breaks to fully enjoy and be present with family and loved ones in 2017.
So there it is guys, my New Year’s Resolutions! I certainly don’t expect for all of these changes to happen overnight, but practice makes perfect, and I hope to put all of these into practice one day at a time. Did any of these goals resonate with you or appear on your own lists? I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you approach the new year!
As always, thanks so much for reading and hope you enjoyed!
